After bone grafting

Protecting a graft site so the new bone matures and stays undisturbed.

Protect the graft

  • You may notice small, gritty particles in your mouth for the first days, which is normal.
  • Do not rinse forcefully, spit hard, or use a straw for the first several days.
  • Avoid pressing on the area with your tongue or fingers.

Comfort and diet

  • Use an ice pack on the cheek for the first day to limit swelling.
  • Stay with soft, cool foods and chew away from the graft site.
  • Take medication as directed, and do not smoke while the site heals.

Keeping it clean

  • Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses the day after surgery.
  • Keep the rest of your mouth clean with careful brushing.
  • Attend all follow-up visits so we can check the graft.

When to call us

  • Swelling worsens after the third day
  • You have heavy bleeding that does not slow with pressure
  • You have a fever or spreading discomfort

If something does not feel right after your procedure, call our office. A member of our surgical team is available for urgent post-operative concerns, day or night.
