All instructionsAfter surgery
After bone grafting
Protecting a graft site so the new bone matures and stays undisturbed.
Protect the graft
- You may notice small, gritty particles in your mouth for the first days, which is normal.
- Do not rinse forcefully, spit hard, or use a straw for the first several days.
- Avoid pressing on the area with your tongue or fingers.
Comfort and diet
- Use an ice pack on the cheek for the first day to limit swelling.
- Stay with soft, cool foods and chew away from the graft site.
- Take medication as directed, and do not smoke while the site heals.
Keeping it clean
- Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses the day after surgery.
- Keep the rest of your mouth clean with careful brushing.
- Attend all follow-up visits so we can check the graft.
When to call us
- Swelling worsens after the third day
- You have heavy bleeding that does not slow with pressure
- You have a fever or spreading discomfort
