After a tooth extraction
Simple steps to control bleeding, protect the clot, and heal comfortably after an extraction.
Control bleeding
- Bite firmly on gauze for thirty to forty-five minutes, and replace it if needed.
- A little oozing is normal for the first several hours.
- Avoid spitting, rinsing hard, or using a straw, since suction can dislodge the clot.
The first few days
- Eat soft, cool foods and stay hydrated.
- Rest for the remainder of the day and avoid heavy activity.
- Start gentle warm salt-water rinses the next day, especially after meals.
Comfort
- Use an ice pack on the cheek to ease swelling on the first day.
- Take pain medication as directed.
- Do not smoke while the site is healing.
When to call us
- Pain worsens noticeably around the third day
- Bleeding is heavy and does not respond to pressure
- You have a fever or increasing swelling
