Before your surgery
General guidance to prepare for surgery, especially if you are having sedation or general anesthesia.
In the days before
- Fill any prescriptions we send ahead of time so they are ready at home.
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you and stay with you if you are having sedation or general anesthesia.
- Tell us about any change in your health or medications since your consultation.
Eating and drinking
- For IV sedation or general anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything for six hours before surgery unless we tell you otherwise.
- For local anesthesia only, a light meal beforehand is fine.
- Take your usual daily medications with a small sip of water unless we advise against it.
What to wear and bring
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing and short sleeves, or sleeves that roll up easily.
- Leave jewelry and contact lenses at home, and avoid nail polish on the day of sedation.
- Bring your ID, insurance information, and a list of your medications.
When to call us
- You develop a cold, fever, or other illness before surgery
- You are unsure whether to take a specific medication
If something does not feel right after your procedure, call our office. A member of our surgical team is available for urgent post-operative concerns, day or night. For a life-threatening emergency, such as difficulty breathing or uncontrolled bleeding, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
